    I ditched all Microsoft products 5 years ago, fully moved to Linux a 100%, I do not regret it a single bit. I tried several distros, mostly using Gnome DE, but I landed on Cinnamon and Linux Mint, knowing that they are gonna adopt newer kernels by default in the new releases made me happy and solidified the Linux Mint home that I am at now. Give Cinnamon a try, out of the box it does most of what gnome does not, Wayland will land into Cinnamon eventually, probably sooner than expected. PS, I tried SuSe for a while, but man, zypper is so slow!

    I see a day when mint is a mother brach itself! I think and hope this is artfully planned, hear me out; they're on "W" (wilma) in the Ubuntu versions, and they're on "F" (faye) in the abc scale of debian editions! I really hope Ubuntu editions end with Z and when they reach Z on debian editions they'd go completely rouge! that's the dream baby!

    Not sure if this comment will ever get seen but here we go. I mostly don't use linux because I have the computer literacy of an 87 year old grandmother. I don't understand computers and i have trouble wrapping around my head around them and most of the games I play I'm told is a pain to get working on Linux without any issues. Ultimately I'm just not smart enough for it.

    • @TheLinuxCast
      @TheLinuxCast 22 часа назад

      @@RhadaGhast100 My best advice, useless though it is, is to solve one problem at a time. If you think "I can't do anything I need to do," then you won't get anything done. Define one thing you need to do, solve that and then move on. It will be less overwhelming that way. Other than that, just know that not everything will be solvable and you will need to adapt. And finally, don't be afraid to ask for help, but also if you get help that seems to be troll-ish or unhelpful, ask someone else. Lots of great people in the community, but there are a**holes, so you'll need to filter those out.

    I've been using computers since the 70s. Having been in charge of several businesses, I was obliged to introduce computer tools to employees. As a result, I've been confronted with perhaps the majority of arguments and counter-arguments from professional users, who were true true true beginners at the time. That said, I'll start with some questions: Do I understand correctly that you're proposing a directly proportional relationship between overrating a tool and divergence of opinions, "protesting" as you so deliberately repeat? What is the link between the effectiveness of a tool and differences of opinion, that you should make it the cornerstone of your damaging conclusions? Isn't the over-evaluation of a tool necessarily reserved for the users for whom it was created? So sir, if you're not a target customer, why do you dare to make such a prejudicial judgment, and in public? Doesn't the fact that you've done so tell us more about you than the fact that it's more important to you to voice your opinion in public than to respect the opinions of the target users? I therefore suggest that, in view of your obvious lack of sensitivity to a certain category of people, you restrict yourself to talking for the sake of talking, offering false conclusions to a line of reasoning that doesn't respect the rules of logic; the two premises (overrated and protest) don't make sense in terms of whether the tool is effective. And no, I've never participated in the making of a distribution.

    One thing you might like is that Just Perfection can decrease the margins in the icons on the right side of the topbar/panel. The spacing isn't that bad with the default GNOME setup, but when everything is in the same panel it can help to make stuff less cramped.

    Linux Mint is the reason my mom is able to get away from Windows. Had it been any other distro, I wouldn't have installed it for her. She needs a Windows-like ease of use and as close to complete stability that she can get and that's Mint. Some people might be completely unreasonable in their praise of Mint but then many Linux users also cannot comprehend why anyone would switch to Linux if they don't want to micro manage every detail. Mint is simply a super solid distro and it does a good job at protecting new users from themselves.

    • @TheLinuxCast
      @TheLinuxCast День назад

      I don't think Mint is bad. I don't think I've ever complained about the distro itself. I don't care for their bifurcated attention between regular Mint and LMDE. I wish they'd just choose one. LMDE seems like an after thought a lot of the time, and that bugs me a bit.

    • @Novacification

      @@TheLinuxCast true, it is a strange split. I'm not sure if they're just trying to avoid getting locked into an ecosystem in case enshittification happens in the future. On the whole though, I don't personally think it's overrated. Despite your suggestion that the development is motivated by a bit of a rebel mentality with regards to Ubuntu, in my opinion the end result is still a big piece of the puzzle to get Linux more mainstream traction and to me that's of huge value to the future of Linux (though I of course don't want all distros to be like mint). Also just to clarify, I'm not hating on the video and as always I did not hesitate to hit that like button :)

    Who likes Windows? I think people that like Windows don't like windows they are entrenched into Windows... If Linux came installed on built computers from Hp, Dell, Lenovo, or Acer... They would like Linux...However Windows its easy its there they don't have to mess with it. All games/ Software like Abobe Nvidia Drivers just work with it... I think those that like Windows don't even know about Linux... They just know the PC is cheaper then MAC and has more Software Available without the 50% brand tax...lol

    Linux Mint was my first Linux install and Everything just worked! I placed it on 40 to 50 machines over the past 9 years and everyone that has received it on their older computers love it (my Grandma was able to use it, she knows nothing about computers and it was perfect she couldn't brick it). Sure you say just use Ubuntu... I installed Ubuntu and had many MANY issues... its just not user friendly. Mint Is NOT Overrated because it does one thing GREAT! It gets people into the Linux community and it is the most welcoming Linux Experience. Tried Pop, Tried Debian... Mint is Debian just Easier to use... Ubuntu I would say is over rated and useless... just install Debian (your reasoning not mine) Why install Ubuntu instead of Mint? its nothing like it other then they both are based off Debian? Mint is amazing and deserves its place. Its the best Noob Linux Distro and the best way to get more to ACTUALLY switch from Windows to Linux.

    I just got back to Linux after 4 or 5 years of only using windows. I'm still amazed how you have to get 2 separate apps to have a say in how your desktop looks. I was an early adopter of gnome when it changed to the shell, but shortly after I knew a lot of things were missing then tweaks and extension manager came along (I remember I handled gnome extensions through a web site, does that still exist?), back then a lot of people complained about how x or Y extension is not part of default gnome, and here we are, I come back to Linux in 2024 and not even the tweaking components are still part of gnome.

Keen to try openSUSE one day, and would love to go back to NixOS one day. I only have a single Surface Book, and I need it for school. Nix would have saved me so much headache at my previous company when we were deploying kiosks running our own custom software that gets updated quite frequently. I've been using it for about a year now on my desktop and laptop, and while the community is atrocious, the software itself is solid. My next job will be similar, so I will be using nix for all our servers and kiosks.

  • @reinux

    The documentation is bad, but the reason it's so bad is because the community is even worse. I kid you not, this is an actual quote from the nixos sub: > Perhaps the program should contain a message like "Please read Dolstra's PhD thesis if you don't understand this error message". You might think it is ridiculous to expect that. I don't think it is. These people would much rather prove they can recite pi to six trillion digits than actually provide any helpful information.

    I gotta be honest, i just switched to linux a couple of days ago. Main reasons: tales of great stability, simplicity (LOL), and none of my data going to horrible companies. I must say its been fun but also a hastle that surpasses anything reasonable to expect from people to do to do the most basic tasks. Example: enable freesync Do i really have to code my way through a task for hours with the risk of completely nuking my system (which i almost did 3 times) only to turn on an option that SHOULD require 2 clicks to do? Why cant i download something, click on it, and boom it installs. I rly dont want to use my terminal for everything (even though it admittably is fun to get the most basic stuff to work in the terminal after hours of work that really just need one mouse click in windows) Next example: I installed a game (osu!) Which is natively supported. I was able to open it clicking on the program in files, but could not start the appimage file from the menu. When i made a launcher in the menu it wouldnt show up. "Fixes" have deleted my cinnamon desktop. It took me hours to accidentally figure out that if i create a launcher on the desktop it works when i add it to the menu. Stuff like this really makes me understand why people aren't using linux. It really makes zero sense for any casual desktop user to switch to linux because it feels like every little thing you want to do makes you feel like you should have studied programming.
